Frequently Asked
Questions
How do I get a catalog? To request one or more catalogs for our British properties please contact us with your name and address. All of our contact information is at the bottom of this page.
Can I rent a house for less than 1 week? Most
houses can be rented for as few as 2 nights and you can
start any day of the week, but please read the catalog carefully
as there are some exceptions, especially in the summer.
How early must I call to rent a good house?
With few exceptions, 4 to 6 months is a good guideline for
rentals. We can rent up to one year in advance.
What do I do about getting food supplies for my house?
In almost every house, basic provisions
are provided. This includes milk, cheese, bread, fresh fruit,
a bottle of wine, cereal, coffee, tea, a sweet, butter and
jam or marmalade.
Will my house have a washer and dryer?
Yes. With very few exceptions,
all houses have washers and dryers.
Do you suggest a cell phone?
Every house has a phone installed,
though they are pay types and cannot accommodate a computer.
We don't suggest cell phones for travel unless it's essential
that you stay in touch because of their high cost and the
fact that you can be reached at every house.
How do I manage money?
An ATM card is your best bet, though you can get
traveler's checks in British pounds. When you are going
into the country, ATM cards, cash credit cards or credit
cards are best. VISA/MC are more welcome than American Express.
Do we need an international driver's
license? The car rental
companies do not require an international license and there
are no laws requiring it, but if you have an accident and
are forced to forfeit your license, it would be much easier
to give up your international license. They are available
at all AAA offices and cost about $15.
Car facts? We
rent all our cars from Auto Europe because they offer us
the best prices and are, without a doubt, the best service
available. Gas costs about $4.50 for 5 liters, and the rental
rates include a 17.5% VAT (tax), unlimited mileage, fire
and third-party liability insurance. CDW is optional at
about $17 to $23 per day. Not all credit cards will cover
you anymore, and not all car companies will accept the fact
that your card company will cover you. Be sure to take proof
of insurance with you. If you're an American, you'll be
driving on the wrong side of the road. We strongly suggest
that you consider an automatic shifter as you will be shifting
with the wrong hand, driving on the wrong side, looking
over your left shoulder. Roof racks are not available but
baby seats are, though only on request.
Can you also get train tickets and
make hotel reservations?
Poe Travel of Little Rock, Arkansas is one of our
connections to airlines, hotels, ships and stairways to
never-never land. Contact Linda Brown at 800-727-1960 and
do tell her that we sent you.
We also do this through Travel Express in New York City.
Contact Laurie Howell via email (travexpres@aol.com)
or telephone (718-797-9300).
Is baby equipment available?
All houses have baby beds and highchairs, but it
is always good to request this in advance. There are no
extra charges. Some houses do not accept children if there
is a safety factor, such as steep cliffs, sheer drop-offs,
unguarded open water, or precious furnishings.
For car service in London we highly recommend Mr. Maslam who
has an E-class or an S-class Mercedes and he can be reached
at 011 44 0794 902 8086.

Maps.
We suggest the spiral book type of
map as it is more comfortable to use in the car and doesn't
fall apart after one day. These are available at good bookstores
across the U.S. or they can be ordered.
